Community Engagement Core Stakeholder Advisory Board

Our Stakeholder Advisory Board (SAB) collaboratively leads, and in some cases helps us implement, all EaRTH Center aims to ensure we meet our goals and are responding to the specific needs and interests of our community, graduate-level healthcare students and practicing healthcare professionals. Our SAB helps us in identifying environmental health research, translation, and education needs as well as opportunities for disseminating EaRTH Center research findings to accelerate the translation and implementation of research findings to clinical care and education.

Brian Beveridge

Co-Executive Director, West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project

Biography

Brian Beveridge has more than 30 years of experience in communications. Beginning as a technical writer, he earned a BA degree in Mass Communications from the University of South Florida. From 1987 to 2004, Mr. Beveridge owned and managed an independent video production company in the Bay Area. He has created marketing programs for Fortune 500 corporations, such as Shell Oil, produced TV programs for the Sports Channel and the San Francisco Giants and written and directed documentary videos for state and local non-profit groups including the California Child Care Resource and Referral Network and the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation.

A resident of West Oakland since 1999, Mr. Beveridge joined the struggle for environmental justice in 2003 after personally experiencing the toxic emissions from the Lesaffre Corporation’s Red Star Yeast factory in his neighborhood.

Ms. Margaret Gordon

Co-Executive Director, West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project

Biography

Margaret Gordon is a lifetime community activist. As a young single mother she worked her way off of welfare by attending commercial cooking school, after which she cooked for various institutions including Children’s Hospital and a UC Berkeley fraternity house. Ms. Gordon is a founding member of the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project, having volunteered for the first three years of operation. She has work experience in mental health services, parent training in the public schools and community organizing.

Appointed by then-Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums to the Oakland Port Commission in 2007, she spent the next five years stridently promoting the interests of community health, workers health and fiscal responsibility in Port operations.

Biography

Katie Huffling, DNP, RN, CNM, FAAN

Executive Director, Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments

Biography

Dr. Katie Huffling is a Certified Nurse-Midwife and the Executive Director of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE). With ANHE, Dr. Huffling works with nurses and nursing organizations to elevate environmental health issues, such as climate change, toxic chemicals, and sustainability in healthcare, amongst the nursing profession. Dr. Huffling is a passionate supporter of nurse led advocacy in support of healthier environments for all.

Dr. Huffling received her DNP in Health Innovation and Leadership from the University of Minnesota. She is an appointed member of the US Environmental Protection Agency Children’s Health Protection Advisory Council and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing the U.S. Health Sector.

Ouahiba Laribi, MPH, PhD

Section Chief, Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, California Environmental Protection Agency

Biography

Ouahiba is the Chief of the Pesticide Exposure Evaluation and Medical Education team at OEHHA. Among other things, her team is responsible for providing medical education on pesticide-related illness to health care professionals across California. In 2012, she joined OEHHA as a toxicologist in the Pesticide Epidemiology team and was the Environmental Justice coordinator from 2015-2018. Prior to joining OEHHA, Ouahiba worked for over a decade as a research scientist in different academic organizations in the US, Spain, France, and Switzerland. Her research focused on the effects of endocrine disruptors on human health. She earned a PhD in cell and molecular biology from the University François Rabelais of Tours, France, and an MPH in Environmental Health Hazard Assessment from the French National School of Public Health.

Wylie Liu, MPH, MPA

Executive Director, UCSF Center for Community Engagement

Biography

Wylie brings extensive experience working across sectors, including community based organizations, public agencies and the healthcare industry, to advance health equity. As the Executive Director of the Center for Community Engagement, she facilitates community-academic-health and healthcare partnerships at UCSF. Her work focuses on community engaged research, community health, education and economic inclusion.

Prior to joining UCSF, she managed the California Pacific Medical Center Community Health Programs, where she focused on partnerships between the Medical Center and community based organizations and clinics to address health disparities and inequities. She also developed numerous city-wide plans and innovative programs to address the needs of the underserved in diverse communities at the San Francisco Department of Public Health.

Micaela Martínez, PhD

Director of Environmental Health, WE ACT for Environmental Justice; Adjunct Assistant Professor, Columbia University, Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health

Biography

Ecologist and justice advocate Dr. Micaela E. Martinez is the Director of Environmental Health at WE ACT for Environmental Justice, responsible for advancing the organization’s efforts to improve environmental health in communities of color and low-income communities by promoting public health awareness, education, coalition-building, and advocacy. She earned her Ph.D. in Ecology & Evolution and previously served as an Assistant Professor at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and Emory University. Her research has focused on infectious disease ecology, social justice, climate change, maternal and infant health, and environmental impacts on health.

Marjenah Moini, MD

Radiation Oncologist; Board Member, San Francisco Bay Physicians for Social Responsibility

Biography

Dr. Marjaneh Moini currently serves on the board of SF Bay PSR and is the co-chair of the Environmental Health Committee at SF Bay PSR. She is passionate about health equity and Environmental Justice and works closely with several community advocacy groups and environmental justice organizations. She is also passionate about supporting youth in their environmental health activism and mentoring medical students and residents. She completed her medical training at Università Cattolica Del Sacro Cuore in Rome, her internship at Yale primary-care program in New Haven, CT and her radiation oncology residency at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. She has held faculty positions in radiation oncology at both Johns Hopkins and UC Davis medical centers. She was the chair of radiation oncology at John Muir Health prior to her retirement from full time practice.

Karen Pierce

Interim Executive Director, Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates

Biography

Karen Pierce, a native San Franciscan, is one of the founders of Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates and a legendary Bayview activist for five decades. She recently retired from the San Francisco Department of Public Health, where she worked in the Population Health Division, and previously in the department’s environmental justice program. She has chaired San Francisco committees and task forces overseeing closures of two power plants, and Port operations on the southern waterfront. She also worked with faculty at the University of California–San Francisco for over a decade to transform the university from a citadel to a neighbor.

Kristin S. Schafer, MA

Director, Collaborative for Health & Environment (CHE)

Biography

Kristin has over three decades of experience in the field of environmental health and justice, holding positions at the Environmental Protection Agency and World Resources Institute before her 25-year tenure at Pesticide Action Network (PAN) North America. Throughout her career she's had a particular focus on children's health and pesticides, collaborating with partners to promote protective policies at the state, national and international levels. Kristin holds a Masters in Social Change and Development from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. She lives with her husband in downtown San Jose where she loves to bike and garden, and currently serves as board co-chair for the community-building urban farm, Veggielution.
